A honing steel (or rod) is a long, narrow, rod-like tool, usually made of steel, ceramic, or diamond-coated steel, designed to maintain a knife's sharp edge rather than remove metal to sharpen it. By passing a knife edge along the rod at a angle, it straightens and aligns microscopic, bent-over metal fibers, restoring cutting efficiency.
